As many of you know, the Carbon County Museum is
working on building a new home. The Museum is
currently in an old church with inconsistent climate
control even for the most basic museum standards.
To interpret just the present collection in a way to
both instruct and inspire our museum visitors, we
would need to more than double the space we already
have. The current Museum is bursting at the seams.
Failure to properly care for the County collections
brings loss of valuable historic artifacts to
institutions outside Carbon County and Wyoming. The
Museum not only cares for the community through
cultural and education work, but also provides
stress-free time for family and friends.
The
proposed new museum is the correct size based on
exhibition needs and appropriate care and housing
for the county’s collections with planned, built-in
room for expansion, both in the near future and in
30 years. The site we selected for building is
Merrell Hill. Merrell Hill is adjacent to
Interstate 80 and Highway 71. Views from Merrell
Hill allow expanded interpretation of the
world-famous Rawlins Uplift, historic downtown
Rawlins, the Snowy Range and the cultural history of
the Red Desert. Interstate 80 is a tremendous
resource. A clearly visible attraction is the key
to getting the thousands of people that pass by each
day.
The
Museum Staff, Board, and Foundation are diligently
working on raising money for this project, estimated
to be a total of 20 million dollars. We are
continually speaking to people, writing letters and
grants and holding special events. The more people
we can get involved, the sooner we can reach our
goal. We are asking you to please participate in
this community project! Volunteer work,
donations, and/or getting the word out are all big
steps toward the future. If you would like to help,
please contact us: 307-328-7813 (Jacqueline or
